Nature calls to me. Being stuck inside behind a computer screen is like slow torture. Seeing new people, exploring near and far, and photographing such adventures is what I crave.

I miss using the toys that make my job fun.

Who wants to pick me up a p45 back and a arca swiss?

Here is a SMALL list for my perfect studio at the moment:

2 digital backs with universal adapters for my horseman LE, hasselblad 503cx and RB67

2 D3’s for fast location and travel w/top nikkor glass

4 profoto 7a kits for industrial and studio

2 profoto 7b or Helsel porty location packs in rolling temba cases

multiple c-stands, modifiers, and go-bo’s including profoto 15 foot umbrella

3 mac intel towers each with 2 cinema displays: each for the studio, lightroom, and van

1 secure location vehicle with compartments for gear, modifiers, and desk w/ computer station bolted in for location backup.

2 drobos for backup and location digital teching

built in cove in the studio

I think that covers what I would like for a one man operation. If any of you want to donate any of these things, feel free to let me know. =-)

Dock

I spent the whole day just organizing and cleaning my computer. These are what i accomplished:

Reorganized 1tb of data by date, job number, and type

Added IPTC data to all jobs

made prints and CD’s for two models

Spent time learning more on Lightroom, C1pro, and Leafcapture

Added new icons for the dock

reprocessed industrial shots, tossed one as a background

made automator batches for backup, maintenance, and FTP

Yet with all this organizing, I found that I really do use most of the programs on my dock on a daily basis. I am fighting between cleanliness and functionality at the moment for my desktop. I am too lazy to have to spotlight a program when I need it. If i had everything i use i swear there would be 60 programs sitting on my dock….

Now I must study SQL, Microsoft Access, and excel for a job that I am applying for. Since my photography isn’t exactly paying the bills at the moment, I am looking for a job to take care of me in the interim.

Character of the flawed

I have decided I really need to use tumblr as my blog like what i used to use my Xanga for. I miss posting up images every day that I had been working on and talking about life, love and happiness.

I stopped writing in xanga after I got in trouble about a personal post I did and a company I was working for thought it was towards them and saw this as a personal attack even though they were in no way intended to be attacked nor had their names in it. I was let go because it was a "flaw in character we do not want to support". How can i be honest about my life, worries, and concerns when this can happen so easily? Another job did the same but reacted to a tweet.

Do I need to become anonymous in my postings? I understand when it comes to business, slander and libel can be punishable by law. If a company is not named, has no direct connection to, or is even advertised in a situation but can be inferred or assumed that because I have worked or currently working with a company that COULD have done those things, i must be talking about them? What happened to freedom of speech?

My problem is that they wouldn't sign my contracts or make one. "Why make a contract when there is trust?" Bullshit. That should have been my red flag to know they were not to be trusted. If it isn't written in stone what they want/not want I have nothing to back me up, nothing I can take to court, and no guarantee of pay.

On a side note- What is up with photographers trying to work assistants/studio managers full time hours but have them under "freelance" so they don't have to pay taxes or follow state law? If an employer wont guarantee your rights because it costs them you have no reason to be working for them at all. Even if you are broke (like my case was).

Now I must decide should I keep my posting to just myself? Be anonymous so I am not liable nor my company? Maybe I should write a disclaimer on the site itself about my freedom of speech? Who knows. I just miss posting my thoughts, images, and sharing my world with you without feeling there will be repercussions for doing so.

What are your thoughts?

On a side note- I will be RSSing my post from my Tumblr to here so that what followers I still have may enjoy.

Miss me?

Don't you love writing a really long post, go to save, then suddenly your browser crashes?

Thanks safari. Appreciate it.

I guess its good that it did crash because most of my last post was of me ranting.

It has been almost 4 months since my last post. Wow. Most of my time has been spent working on shooting, teaching, looking for work (yes. I'm unemployed yet again), and traveling.  A little recap.

I had the opportunity to assist for FLEX magazine, shooting some pro body builders at the Arnold Classic. That was the best experience I have ever had assisting. They loved my work and eye, it was technical, lots of lighting, and no BS or drama. Just fun. They want me to come down to LA and assist there. I may take up the offer if I can experience that again.

I spent the last couple weeks in Denver and Carbondale Co, seeing old friends and making new ones. In my first week in Denver I floundered. All my clients backed out. Instead I spent time with my friend Gin and with another friend from Columbus, Joe, who was down to see his family at the same time. Went to a bunch of parties, spent time roaming around town taking pictures, Saw one of my favorite comedians perform, drinking HEAVILY,.... even met a bunch of people from the central valley of California where i grew up.

At the end of the first week, i stumbled upon two pro models who were at the same coffee shop as I, which is behind the place I was staying. Talked to them for a bit and in one day I had a huge shoot set, found hair stylists from Lo'Real (who were ALSO at the cafe hanging out) and shot after hours in the cafe.

The next week was spent exploring Aspen, Snow Mass, Vail, Carbondale, Glenwood springs and Basalt. Shot nearly 22 gigs! So many panoramics and nature images. Also shot a famous sculpters work in his studio with a model. (to be shown soon!)

Now i sit back, avoid the bill collectors calls as much as possible, and work away. As I finally pour into the Photoshop CS3 book and render images for an animation in Maya I will share some 360 degree panoramics I shot while on my journeys. First time doing it. I hope you all enjoy.

More images to come, i hope,

-Dan

These images are nearly 500mb 16bit pans. With all the rendering, writing music for the animation, batching full res RAWs and stiching.... I'm suprised my computer is still working. I'm running out of memory...

Anyone want to buy me a 2tb Raid or drobo? *sigh*
